This trip was a total surprise to me for my birthday! The back story is that for the past three years we have somehow managed to be on an island for some sort of vacation for Matt’s birthday. And apparently last year (I remember this now, but it took him reminding me…) I had made a comment about how I wanted to be “on an island for MY birthday by next year.”

On my actual birthday Matt told me we were going somewhere…mostly because he HAD to since there’s absolutely zero chance in this entire universe that with my ninja spy skills he could plan a trip, prepare the kids, get the house ready and pack for me without me knowing…nevertheless, he did a great job keeping the location a secret!

He had me pack for myself but didn’t tell me what for….which, might I add is like telling a kid to make a sandwich without giving him bread. It’s quite the undertaking for this recovering over-packer…okay fine, I know my husband will eventually read this…I’m not recovering…I still very much over pack. Every. Single. Time. I need therapy…

We took the kids to school, said our goodbyes and got in the car. First stop was coffee and then with every turn I tried to guess where we were heading…2 hours later we crossed over the bridge and he reminded me of my 2015 request for an island! Ahhhhh!!!! Yippee!

We started off by checking into our little hotel and then headed straight toward the bike rental shop so we could explore the island. We took the scenic route to the Del…which is the huge massive hotel built in the late 1800’s that Marilyn Monroe and a few presidents have stayed at. The history for that building is fascinating.

We got some ice cream, explored the property and watched the sunset huddled by a fire pit. Without kids to wake us up the next day we thought we’d get suuuuuper crazy and stay out past 9:30pm…whoa….watch out Southern CA! We went to a restaurant, split a late dinner, listened to some live music and chatted the night away.

The next day we took the bikes down main street to a coffee shop. I don’t know about other couples, but we literally keep lists in the notes app on our phones of topics to discuss whenever we get a quiet moment together. (Does anyone else do this?!?! Please tell me we aren’t the only weirdos…) Cuz you know it’s not exactly the most meaningful and sentimental approach to be having a heartfelt soul searching conversation while wiping a small toddlers rear and breaking up the latest argument over which child gets to hold the Pokemon eraser. Just sayin’….

So we keep these things written down and bust out our “Topics To Discuss” at times like this…when we are all alone and there’s no chance of someone coming up and screaming “I pooted!” right in the middle of our convo…

We sat under an umbrella at a table on the sidewalk just outside of the cute, quaint coffee shop and talked, laughed and cried together for the entire morning. Such sweet times…

Then we hurried back to catch the ferry boat to go over toward the Gaslamp Quarter for a facial Matt had secretly booked for me. It was probably the best facial I’ve ever had and although I’m never prone to exaggerate (that’s a lie) it really was quite amazing!

We then shopped around for a bit before heading back to shower and get dolled up for a night out at a fancy restaurant. You know, the kind you’d never bring your kids to…except for the people at the table right next to us who totally DID bring their kid with them and that kid had apparently never ever been taught the importance of an “inside” voice….but that’s beside the point.

Dinner was fantastic! When you catch Matt on one of his funny streaks it’s always the best time ever! And this was another one of those times I laughed so hard my sides literally hurt! Or…it could have been the “insane I’m embarrassed to admit how much and there’s NOT ONE THING we ate that was healthy, I should have worn stretchy yoga pants , let me just tell you one of the items was Lobster Mac N Cheese and another was a Molten Lava Cake, oh my word….GUILTY” food I’d eaten—but it was all such a fun time!!!!

After dinner, we stopped off at a bar and played pool. I barely lost the first two games…missing it by only one ball before he beat me. But the third game I absolutely won!!! And I know he didn’t let me win because he gets mad when he loses and he got mad! 🙂 So I KNOW it was legit!!!! And I even took a pic of what was left on the table when I won! Three of his stripes plus the 8 were still left!!! Ahhh!!! Best birthday present ever is beating Matt at pool! Just kidding honey…I’m sorry you lost and I promise I won’t rub it in (more lies).

The last day we woke up late and since we had no little people in our bed asking to watch Little Einsteins on our I-phones we laid around and read books. And not even ones about how caterpillars turn into butterflies or how little curious monkeys are always getting into trouble….but real books with big words!  We then packed up, checked out of the hotel, grabbed some breakfast to-go and took it to the beach. We listened to the waves, watched the planes practicing their take-offs and landings, played frisbee, and read some more before heading back home!

Since most people I know are in a similar boat as me in the fashion realm of trying to look cute and not break the bank I’ve decided so answer some of the most common questions I am asked about my own wardrobe. Being married to a pastor and a momma to five littles money is not free flowing toward my fashion desires these days, so getting creative is an absolute.

Q: How Often Do You Shop?

Not very. Unless you define “shopping” as looking around for good deals, looking around for styles that really stand out to me, or comparing prices and searching online for styles I love. But shopping does not always mean buying. I wait until I find items or things I absolutely love before I buy.

Q: Where Do You Buy Your Clothes?

The days of casually strolling through shops on my own are extinct, so, the majority of my shopping is now on the internet. I love online boutiques and stores that have trendy styles, but are still really inexpensive. I try to always link items that I have so that you can get an idea of where things are coming from.

Q: What Kind Of Items Do You Buy?

I now have to be super creative with looking for things that I want verses things I need. I get ideas from social media, billboards, magazines, friends or even strangers and then think through items I already own that would look similar. I shop around online to find the best deals I possibly can and then add it to my “wish list.” This is the same process for any style I wear…athletic, street, church, date night, causal etc…

Q: What Is Your Favorite Thing To Shop For?

Practical, versatile, and comfortable. I love styles that I don’t feel like I want to change out of them the second I get home. And styles that are good for multiple parts of my life like going to volunteer at the kids’ school, heading off to the grocery, going out to lunch with a friend, and then back home for homework and cooking dinner. I strongly dislike having to change 3 times a day so I avoid it as much as I can.

Q: Do You Buy Brand Name or Generic?

Both. I love to mix the two. Sure, if I had all the money in the world maybe I’d buy more name brand, but that is never ever going to happen!  As I think through different outfits and what makes each style stand out to me it is different every time. A name brand pair of boots with some generic leggings, or a name brand top with some cut up cheapy jeans, or a name brand pair of wide leg pants with a t-shirt from target…it’s always a blend of both for me.

But, I never buy generic running shoes. I just can’t. I log a lot of miles in my shoes so they need to hold up. And there’s just some things that should never be generic! Like mayonnaise:)

Q: How Do You Update An Old Look To Make It Trendy?

Pairings and shoe styles matter the most.  I heard on the radio this past week that the first thing people notice about the opposite gender is their shoes. I’m not sure if that’s true or not, but I do agree that shoes matter.
The thing about fashion is that it is always changing. And that’s the whole point of fashion…those who sell it will always make money because it is always being adjusted and updated. But much of what I have owned for years can be worn in new trendy ways if styled differently or are paired with a trendy up-to-date shoes.

The clothes I’m wearing in these photos are things I have had for years! No, I’m not kidding…that sweater may have been one of my all time most used purchases! 🙂 The shoes and jewelry are new and I’ve never worn these particular items together in this way so it all “feels” new to me.

**One Final Tip: Share with and borrow from friends!

In college I used to live in a sorority house with over 100 other girls. If any of us needed something we didn’t have we would borrow from one another!  If you’ve got some friends that love to dress in a similar way don’t be afraid to speak up and either ask to borrow something or set up a clothes swap where you can trade items.

How, when, where do you shop? Do you have any shopping-on-the-cheap advice you can share that we can all learn from too?

Last month was our 14th wedding anniversary! I cannot believe it’s been that long! I thought I’d share just a couple of my favorite pics from our night out together. And a little bonus photo down below of what most of my pics look really like! 🙂

We went to eat at a restaurant in Orange, CA that overlooked the entire county! We could see the lights and the water and even the Disney fireworks show that happens every night at 9pm! It was perfect weather that night and the food was amazing!

One of my favorite things to do each year on our anniversary is to remember all of the details that we can from the day we got married. From getting ready to me feeling so nervous I thought I might throw up, finding out someone had forgotten the flowers, to the sweet note given to me by my love just before I walked down the isle, the candles melting far too fast resulting in the stage being lit on fire (uh, ya, that really happened)…to Matt’s cousin almost passing out…to our first kiss as a married couple…and the reception we never got to sit down at, the toasts that lasted forever, my brother our DJ, my sisters crazy hair, our first dance, the awkward and slightly inappropriate dancing (caught on video) of some of the guests…and the kid that wanted a “souvenir” from our wedding and decided to reach into my nicely fixed hair to steal a bobby pin from my up-do…yes, I’ll calling you out Dillon Ford!!!!! 🙂 Our borrowed getaway car that the owner wanted returned that very night (c’mon, really????)…having to drop off that car absolutely exhausted and then finally getting to our room not having eaten anything at all!!!! We still laugh at how we literally considered driving through McDonalds in our wedding attire because we were starving…

There were so many things that went wrong, that weren’t ideal or that we would for SURE change if we could do it all over again. But we look back now and realize that some of our most favorite memories from our wedding day are the ones that didn’t go right! Isn’t it funny how life works like that? The things that horrify us now become some of the most treasured memories.

Remembering the imperfections from our wedding day give me perspective of how to deal with the here and now. I know that the things that get to me now will one day be a gold mine of memories…the messy house, the dishes in the sink, the laundry that never ever ended, the crazy kids and the volume inside our home, the forgotten tasks and the silly fights we all get into…one day we will look back and cherish it all.

So today, I am going to choose to lighten up…I’m not even going to edit this post before I publish it. I’m not going to fret about the toys on the floor or the fact that I haven’t yet showered for the day. I’m now going to rush over to the kids school and after that probably wander around Target for a bit while I neglect my real  “to-do” list… Happy Tuesday everyone!

This kiddo cracks me up! He decided to dress himself today and he put on soccer shorts, a bright orange shirt and snow boots!  I couldn’t resist putting him with me in these pics! His ‘get-up’ and his lil snack cup in hand are just the cutest! Almost every day he brings me a flower…which really just means that since I just admitted that I now have to publicly apologize to my neighbors because most days their from your front yards! I’m sorry!

And can you tell that he put the tie strings from the shorts are up and around his head?! Love love love it! When I asked him if that was on purpose he said to me, “FOR SURE! I like it like that mom!”

Me too Buddy, me too.

The other day my neighbor came over to surprise us with Angels tickets! It happened to be one of the boys birthdays, but since there were only four tickets it was just me with the three oldest boys who went.  We were given a parking pass that got us up right by the gate and the seats were amazing!  The boys LOVED it and were totally into it!

We got Dippin Dots, hot dogs, Oreo churros and some fan stuff! Since the tickets were free I decided to spoil the boys with the extras we normally wouldn’t get to do when all 7 of us go places. The security guard who was in charge of checking our tickets each and every time we re-entered finally just gave up after we passed him for the 16th time! 🙂

I actually paid attention to the game this time…but I have to admit my kids faces as they screamed and cheered and ate their treats was the absolute best part of the whole night! The Angels lost in the 10th inning that night but I honestly have to say this was the most fun I’ve EVER had at a baseball game! Go Angels! Can’t wait to go back again!
